The rest of the week passed quickly, and before I knew it, it was Sunday morning. My thoughts had often drifted to Miles during the past several days. I was now sitting at the island in my kitchen, sipping the last of my breakfast coffee and trying to finalize a menu for my next dinner with Miles.

My phone rang. “Hello?”

“Hi, Eli. It’s Miles. I hope this isn’t too early to call?”

“Not at all. In fact, I was just making notes about our next meal.”

“Um … notes? As in things we might talk about?” Miles sounded confused.

“Oh, no. Sorry. I wasn’t really clear, was I?” I started to explain. “I thought perhaps you’d like to come over for dinner. I was trying to decide on a menu.”

“Really? I don’t want you to go through so much trouble for me,” he protested.

“Nonsense, it’s no trouble at all. I really enjoy cooking and figured I could show off my culinary skills.”

“Ah, so this is going to be a competition between us, then? Who’s got the better food game?” There was amusement in his voice. “In that case, I’d be honored to dine at your home.”

“Perfect. How about Tuesday evening?”

“That’s good for me, but in the meantime, I was wondering if you’d like to meet for coffee this morning? I really don’t want to wait until Tuesday to see you.”

I could feel myself blushing, happy that Miles couldn’t see my face. I hadn’t been pursued like this in quite a few years. “Um, coffee would be nice.”

“I thought we could meet at the Cozy Bean and get something to go, then take a walk to the pond. It’s a beautiful morning.”

“I’d like that,” I said, trying not to sound too eager but probably failing miserably. “What time can you be there?”

“I’ll see you in fifteen minutes.”
